About the National Human Rights Commission Internship

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been mandated to promote human rights literacy and awareness under Section 12(h) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

To spread awareness among university students about the need for protection and promotion of human rights, the Commission has been regularly conducting internship programmes since 1998.

The Commission offers structured internship programmes for university/college students to gain practical exposure to human rights work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students who have completed 1st year and are pursuing 2nd or 3rd year LL.B. (3-year course)
  • Students who have completed 3 years or Semester VI of the integrated 5-year law course and are pursuing 4th and 5th years
  • Students pursuing LL.M.
  • Students pursuing PG Diploma/MA in Human Rights, or PG students of Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, or any discipline of Social Sciences (preference to final-year students)
  • Only students of regular courses of UGC-recognised universities are eligible
  • Minimum 65% marks in Class XII and all subsequent semesters
  • Age: Not exceeding 28 years

Mode of Internship

On-site at NHRC, Delhi

Duration

  • Summer Internship: June–July
  • Winter Internship: December–January
  • A 4-week offline programme providing practical exposure in the field of human rights

Stipend

₹12,000 + travel allowance (3rd AC train fare to/from the educational institute to Delhi)

Application Process

  1. Submit a 300–500-word Statement of Purpose (SOP) on: “Reason for Joining as an Intern in NHRC” along with the online application
  2. Selection is based on:
    • Class XII – 30 marks
    • Graduation – 40 marks
    • SOP – 30 marks
  3. Preference given to candidates with research potential in human rights
  4. Students who have attended previous NHRC one-month summer/winter internships are not eligible
