About the Organisation
The Intellectual Property Rights Cell (IPR Cell) of Government Law College, Mumbai, is an academic body dedicated to fostering awareness, research, and practical training in the field of Intellectual Property Law. Government Law College, established in 1855, is Asia’s oldest law college and is affiliated with the University of Mumbai. The institution has a rich legacy of producing eminent jurists, legal practitioners, and policymakers, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Nani Palkhivala, and Ram Jethmalani.
The Competition is organised in collaboration with Jehangir Gulabbhai & Bilimoria & Daruwalla (JGBD), a leading law firm established in 1900. The firm has extensive experience in Intellectual Property Laws, including trademark prosecution, opposition proceedings, infringement actions, and related criminal prosecutions before various judicial and quasi-judicial fora across India, including the Trade Marks Registry, High Courts, and the Supreme Court of India.
About the Opportunity
The Trade Mark Opposition Competition is a national-level academic competition aimed at simulating real-world trademark opposition proceedings. The Competition seeks to provide participants with hands-on exposure to procedural and substantive aspects of trademark law under the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and the Trade Marks Rules, 2017.
Participants are required to engage in a structured process involving:
- Drafting statutory pleadings and evidence
- Exchanging documents as per procedural timelines
- Presenting oral arguments in hearings before the Registrar
The Competition combines written submissions and oral advocacy, thereby equipping participants with practical skills relevant to Intellectual Property litigation and prosecution practice.
Theme
- The Competition is centred on Trademark Opposition and Unfair Competition Law, with emphasis on:
- Opposition proceedings before the Registrar of Trade Marks
- International trademark and unfair competition issues
- Procedural compliance under the Trade Marks Rules, 2017
- The fictional problem is prepared by the Organising Committee and reflects realistic legal disputes encountered in trademark practice.
Eligibility
- Open to students enrolled in 3-year and 5-year LL.B. programmes
- Students must be currently matriculated in a recognised law institution
- LL.M. students who already hold a law degree are not eligible
- Each team must consist of two members from the same institution
- Proof of current enrolment of each participant must be submitted along with the entry form
Registration Fee
- ₹3,500 per team
- The registration fee includes accommodation for two nights
- Payment must be made to the official account of the IPR Cell, Government Law College, Mumbai. Proof of payment is mandatory and must be submitted during registration
Competition Format
Written Submissions (Preliminary Rounds)
All participating teams are required to submit the following documents:
- Notice of Opposition (Rule 42)
- Counterstatement (Rule 44)
- Evidence in Support of Opposition (Rule 45)
- Evidence in Support of Application (Rule 46)
- Evidence in Reply by Opponent (Rule 47)
Submissions must be made electronically as per the timelines prescribed.
Oral Rounds
- Online Preliminary Oral Rounds
- Dates: 31 January & 1 February 2026
- Format: Hearing before the Registrar (online)
- Time allocation: 20 minutes per team (10 minutes per speaker)
- Offline Oral Rounds
- Dates: 13 & 14 February 2026
- Venue: Government Law College, Mumbai
- Rounds: Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and Finals
- Time allocation:
- Quarter-finals: 30 minutes
- Semi-finals: 40 minutes
- Finals: 45 minutes
Prizes
- Winning Team: ₹50,000
- Runner-up Team: ₹30,000
- Best Oralist (Speaker): ₹10,000
- Best Written Submission: ₹10,000

Registration Process
Interested teams must first complete the Provisional Registration Form. Based on provisional registration, selected teams will be informed via email. Such teams must then complete the Final Registration process and pay the registration fee within the stipulated timeline. The problem statement will be shared with selected teams via email.
